Brian Swanson, Psy.D., J.D. (PSY 25582) is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, as well as associated behavioral challenges, in children, adolescents, and young adults. He works closely with families to promote emotional stability, resilience, and long-term growth.
Dr. Swanson earned his Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) and Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy, from the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology. His clinical training spans a broad continuum of care, from intensive treatment settings to outpatient private practice.
He completed his APA-accredited internship at Pacific Clinics Monrovia Intensive Treatment Program, where he provided specialized treatment to children and adolescents with histories of severe trauma and significant behavioral dysregulation. He received advanced training in mood disorders, personality disorders, and psychotic disorders during his externship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Swanson also trained at the UCLA Center for the Assessment and Prevention of Prodromal States (CAPPS), where he worked with adolescents and young adults experiencing early and emerging symptoms of psychosis. His additional clinical experience includes work with individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, mood disorders, personality disorders, and substance-related conditions in intensive outpatient and community mental health settings, including Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services and other multidisciplinary treatment programs.
In addition to psychotherapy, Dr. Swanson has extensive experience in psychological assessment. He received specialized training at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), conducting evaluations for children with developmental disorders. He also trained at the Sports Concussion Institute, where he assessed mild traumatic brain injuries, sports-related concussions, and early cognitive changes associated with neurodegenerative conditions.
Dr. Swanson currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Pepperdine University, where he teaches courses focused on integrating psychological theory with clinical practice, including the development of interpersonal competence and evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies. He has authored and collaborated on several professional publications and has been published in the Harvard Review of Psychiatry.
In addition to his clinical career, Dr. Swanson is a licensed attorney (California Bar No. 204652). He practiced for approximately seven years as a litigation attorney, handling complex corporate, employment, property, and professional liability matters. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California Los Angeles.
Earlier in his academic career, Dr. Swanson was a collegiate student-athlete and played defensive end for the UCLA Bruins football team (1989–1992). He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors and Chief Financial Officer for Pacific Asian Counseling Services (PACS), a nonprofit agency dedicated to serving the mental health needs of immigrant Asian Pacific Islander children and families.
